In Canberra's climate, reverse cycle air conditioning is the most efficient way to heat and cool a home — cheaper to run than gas ducted heating, cheaper than portable heaters, and cheaper than any other electric heating option.

A modern inverter reverse cycle unit delivers 3–5 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity — an efficiency (COP) that no resistive heater can match.

Replacing gas heating: compare the whole changeover

Reverse-cycle systems move heat rather than producing all of it through an electric element. The ACT Government recommends them as an efficient heating and cooling option, but a household's savings depend on equipment performance, insulation, tariffs and operating habits. Compare heat delivered and annual use, not just the gas and electricity unit prices.

A gas-to-electric changeover may involve electrical supply work, duct inspection, removal of the old heater and separate arrangements for the gas connection. If gas remains for hot water or cooking, its supply charge may continue. Obtain an itemised scope and investigate current assistance before signing an installation contract.

Check rebates and loans before ordering

ACT Home Energy Support has concession-card, residence, property-value and workshop requirements. Eligible upgrades and rebate limits must be checked against the current participant guidelines. The Sustainable Household Scheme is a loan rather than a general cash rebate; its current general terms include interest, while some concession arrangements differ.

Do not assume every supplier or product is eligible. Confirm the required approval sequence with the program and loan provider before paying a deposit. NSW properties, including Queanbeyan, are not covered simply because an installer also serves the ACT. Program links below are official references, not a promise that an application will succeed.

Frequently asked questions

In Canberra, yes. Reverse cycle delivers about 3–5 kWh of heat per 1 kWh of electricity, and Canberra gas prices have climbed significantly. Most homes save $400–$900 a year switching from gas ducted to reverse cycle ducted.

Yes — modern units heat effectively down to −15°C. Capacity does drop below 0°C, which is why sizing is critical.

In most cases, yes — especially if the gas heater is over 12 years old. We can often reuse existing ductwork.
